History of MOVE

1970s
A group of volunteer leaders, the Director of the Voluntary Action Center (VAC), and the Chief of Voluntary Service at the VA Hospital began meeting monthly to share information and resources.

1982–1983
The group became autonomous from the VAC, formed its first Board of Directors, and established bylaws. During this time, the organization operated under several names, including Volunteer Coordinators Council and VIPS — Volunteers in Program Services.

1984
The organization’s name was officially changed to DOVIA — Directors of Volunteers in Agencies — collaborating with regional and national groups of the same name. At its height, DOVIA had more than 50 active members, hosted monthly educational meetings, organized an annual conference, and provided scholarships for members to attend national volunteer management trainings.

2011–2012
The organization was rebranded as MOVE — Managers of Volunteer Engagement — generating renewed interest from local volunteer managers and community members. A new logo was created, and the organization was formally accepted by the Washburn Law Clinic to begin the process of obtaining 501(c)(3) status.

2017
The first MOVE member earned the Certification in Volunteer Administration (CVA), elevating the professionalism of the local Board of Directors’ leadership. Since then, three additional members have also achieved their CVA credential.

2019
The MOVE Board of Directors voted to reestablish a professional development scholarship fund and awarded its first grant.

2020
During the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, MOVE utilized a virtual platform to support volunteer managers and nonprofits as they navigated the rapidly changing landscape of service. While many local associations faced challenges, MOVE continued to grow and advance the field of volunteer engagement in Kansas.

2023
MOVE launched Dialogue at Dialogue, an informal networking opportunity for volunteer managers to brainstorm ideas, solve challenges, share resources, and build relationships with fellow nonprofit professionals—while also supporting a local volunteer-powered nonprofit organization.

2024
Amy Pinger, CVA, a longtime MOVE board leader and member, was selected to serve on the national Board of Directors for Association of Leaders in Volunteer Engagement (AL!VE) representing the Midwest region.
